"Beautiful," Artwork by Sarthak Talreja

"Beautiful," a series about body positivity. Pen and Ink, 2020.

Artist's Statement:

Social media and the media itself has a lot of influential take on what we think of ourselves.

I believe that from an early age there is a huge amount of pressure on what we need

to look like and there is a specific preferred body type that is approved among our peers and in general.

On social media, everyone makes impressions on others. People judge others based on how they and their bodies look in the pictures they post.

For this reason, people often present themselves as if they were "perfect."

Because “what we convey to others is a matter of what we choose to share in order to make a good impression and what we unintentionally reveal as a byproduct

of who we are and how we react to others” (Boyd, 2015).

This made me wonder how I could contribute to this movement in a medium I believe in.

So, I decided to work on this series where I ink a few phenomenal poses with the intention to highlight

the exact portions on which they are being judged. With the idea to embrace the beauty of what they have naturally.

While the challenge is that "ME" personally was once accused of body shaming for which I feel guilty by heart and to have things in mind while working on this was a heavy task yet relieving.

I always had a genuine fear of keeping a part of me outside on a platform like this for a lot of eyes to witness, but I chose this way and have no regrets about it.
